Tokugawa Stronghold

The roof is often the most impressive part of traditional Japanese architecture. In many cases, ornate roofs can be seen to make up half or more of a given structure. There is something endlessly engaging about the sweeping lines and complex tiling. This roof is part of a large Buddhist temple complex in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, which dates back to the dawn of the Edo Period (1603-1868). Close inspection will reveal the hollylock crest of the Tokugawa clan, the shoguns who ruled Japan for nearly three centuries.
