Temple of Daruma

Daruma figures are commonly found in temples, souvenir shops, businesses and homes throughout Japan. Modelled after Bodhidharma, the monk who brought Zen Buddhism from India to China, the figures are brightly painted, hollow, and believed to bring good luck. An owner will mark a vow to achieve a goal by painting in one of the eyes. Once the goal is realized, the other eye is filled in.

This image was taken in a Buddhist temple in the Kansai region noted for having the largest number of Daruma figures in the country. It captures only a fraction of the collection.
