Tengu Bath
Tengu are legendary creatures with roots in ancient Buddhist scripture. Sometimes depicted with beaks or extremely long noses, they also have a place in Shinto mythology. Tengu are often associated with war, and were reputed to have taught swordsmanship to certain warriors.
This massive tengu mask looks down on bathers at an Edo Period (1603-1868) onsen hot spring with particularly scalding water in a rural and mountainous part of the country.
