Weathering the Storm

Completed in 1252 when Kamakura was the capital of the military government, this massive bronze statue of Amitabha Buddha commands the undivided attention of any who seek an audience. Its wooden housing, and indeed its host temple of Kotoku-in, have been destroyed several times by storms, tsunami and earthquakes. Once gilded in gold, centuries of rain, snow and sunshine have left its surface with an eye-catching assortment of green and grey hues accentuated on this day by the storm gathering overhead.
