Along the Nakasendo

In the Edo Period (1603-1868), the Nakasendo byway connected Kyoto with Edo (present-day Tokyo). The coastal Tokaido byway was often frequented by daimyo, the lords of Japan’s feudal provinces, and their processions on their regular trips to pay respect to the shoguns in Edo. The Nakasendo byway, meanwhile, wound through the mountains and was less crowded. Many of the post-towns that catered to weary travellers still exist, including this one, captured on a snowy winter's afternoon.
