Lighting the Way
Toro are traditional stone lanterns often found within the grounds of temples, shrines and, in more recent times, gardens. Like many elements of traditional architecture, they originated in China. Toro are used to achieve balance and harmony in a space, and to compliment the surrounding nature. It is perhaps no accident that the symbol for capital, 京 (kyō), which is used in both Tokyo (東京) and Kyoto (京都), resembles a toro.
