Leaves on the Eaves

The trappings of autumn decorate the eaves at a local temple. The circular motifs, called gatou in Japanese, arrived from China in the sixth century, around the same time as Buddhism. As a result, gatou often depict flowers that have special meaning in the Buddhist faith.
